The Summer Internship Program (PIV, for its acronym in Spanish) of the Directorate General of Economic Research of Banco de México aims to attract Ph.D. students in Economics, Finance and related areas to carry out research work in these fields.

Requirements

Candidates must submit the following documents only through EconJobMarket:

  • Resumé specifying the current state of their Ph.D. studies.
  • Research proposal describing the project to be developed throughout the internship. The project should be a work in progress, ideally, at an intermediate or advanced stage.
  • List of three research topics in which the candidate has a particular interest.
  • Academic recommendation letter from his/her advisor or a professor familiar with the candidate’s research or academic performance ─please include the name, phone number and email of the recommender.
  • It is recommended to include any sample writing, such as finished articles, a thesis chapter, coursework, a publication or work in progress.

Application

  • The deadline for submission is April 4, 2025.
  • Selected candidates will be informed before May 9, 2025.
  • The program has a maximum duration of 60 calendar days and usually takes place between June and August. The specific dates of the internship may be agreed with Banco de México, provided it does not exceed 60 calendar days.
  • The 2025 Summer Internship Program will take place in person at Banco de México’s facilities. Exceptionally, with prior authorization from the Directorate General of Economic Research, internships may be carried out in hybrid or remote format.

Contract Details

Selected applicants will sign a professional service contract with Banco de México, with a maximum duration of 60 calendar days. They will receive to this effect a maximum compensation before taxes of up to US$ 5,600, which will be paid under the conditions established by the Bank when a contract is signed. The total amount includes:

  • US$ 2,800 per month for research work. If exceptionally a contract term is agreed for less than 60 calendar days, the number of calendar days of the stay will be paid proportionally, for which the monthly amount will be divided by 30.
  • If the internship is carried out in person for a period of at least 53 calendar days, a round trip economy class airline ticket departing from an airport near the place where the candidate currently studies will be paid for up to US$ 1,500. If exceptionally, a shorter stay in person is agreed, Banco de México will not make any payment for the purchase of the plane ticket.
  • Selected Mexican candidates will receive the aforementioned amounts in national pesos based on the exchange rate on the date of publication of this Call.
  • Selected candidates must submit any documentation required from them by Banco de México, such as a professional license for Mexicans and an active Mexican bank account owned by the candidate.
  • If the prevailing tax rules require it, selected candidates will have to be registered in the Federal Taxpayers Registry (RFC) of the Tax Administration Service (SAT) in Mexico, and their federal tax files up to date. Taxes are calculated based on the total paid amount (fees and airfare) and, if applicable, Banco de México will withhold what is required under applicable laws in Mexico.
